Andrew Laties, author of Rebel Bookseller
In conversation with independent booksellers Denis Johnson (Melville House), Tatiana Nicoli (Boulevard Books), Christine Onorati (WORD), and Margarita Shalina (St. Mark's Bookshop)
The revival of independent bookselling has already begun, and is one of the amazing stories of our times. Bookseller Andy Laties wrote the first edition of Rebel Bookseller six years ago, hoping it would spark a movement. Now, with this new edition from Seven Stories Press, Laties’s book can be a rallying cry for everyone who wants to better understand how the rise of the big bookstore chains has led in some ways to their decline, and how even in the face of e-readers and online juggernauts the movement to support locally owned independent stores, especially bookstores, is on the rise. Andy talks this evening with booksellers on the front lines of a new era of independent bookstores, and shares his radical ideas for new projects and innovations. Panelists include Denis Johnson, founder of the acclaimed indie press Melville House, which also has a bookstore storefront in DUMBO, Brooklyn; Tatiana Nicoli, owner of the brand-new Boulevard Books & Cafe in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn; Christine Onorati, owner of the innovative and successful young Greenpoint bookstore WORD; and Margarita Shalina, consignment and small press buyer at a venerable and still unique indie St. Mark's Bookstore in the East Village, Manhattan.
